As the new Manchester United boss outlines transfer ambitions, Ruben Amorim looks at a £175 million Sporting raid.
As the Portuguese coach gets ready to succeed Erik ten Hag later this month, it has been reported that incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim intends to bring three Sporting Lisbon players to Old Trafford next summer.
Amorim will take over on November 11 after United and Sporting reached a compensation agreement worth about £10 million. However, the club is concerned that he would poach some of their best players.
Although the 39-year-old manager has already promised Sporting that he won’t raid them during the January transfer window, the Sun claims that three of his former players may be joining him at the end of the current campaign.
According to the article, Amorim might approve a £175 million spending spree on attacker Viktor Gyokeres, who is valued at around £84 million, midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who is valued at £40 million, and defender Goncalo Inacio, who is valued at £50 million.
In recent months, Gyokeres has been closely associated with both United and Arsenal. With Amorim joining the team, the association with Old Trafford will only grow.
Last season, the Swede scored 43 goals in 50 games, making him one of the world’s most productive forwards. He has 16 in 15 games this season.
He was a Brighton native who only made eight appearances for the Seagulls before establishing himself at Coventry, where he scored 43 goals in 2021–2023.
When questioned about the possibility of bringing Gyorkeres to United, Amorim, whose first game is away at Ipswich Town on November 24, denied the rumors and vowed not to return to the club for additions in January.
“I’m not going to get any players from Sporting in January,” he said. “Gyokeres costs €100million and it’s very difficult.”
Although he maintained that he was content at the club, the player personally addressed the rumors and declined to completely deny them.
“Going to Manchester United with Amorim?” he asked. I’m here, but I’m not sure. I don’t give it much thought, but I truly enjoy being here. I’m having fun here. I regret his departure. We hope the best for him.
