“The government isn’t even entitled to a detention hearing in this case—much less detention,” Garcia’s lawyers argue in a brief contesting the government’s plans to hold Kilmar Abrego Garcia pending trial in the federal case against him.

They contend that “Mr. Abrego Garcia should be released” because the charges—conspiracy to transport aliens and unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens—do not constitute violent crimes, offenses carrying a maximum sentence of ten years or more, crimes involving a minor victim, or offenses involving the possession or use of a dangerous weapon. Additionally, they contend that Abrego Garcia poses no flight danger. The government cites no evidence that Mr. Abrego Garcia (1) has a history of avoiding arrest, (2) has traveled abroad on a regular basis recently, (3) has close ties to nations that would lead him to seek asylum there, or (4) has a history of felony convictions.

Nashville, Tennessee will host Abrego Garcia’s arraignment and detention hearing on Friday morning. According to U.S. Capitol Police, a man was arrested today outside the conservative Heritage Foundation after allegedly spitting and pepper-spraying two special police officers who were in charge of the building’s security. The 39-year-old Nathaniel Wetter-Taylor was taken into custody on two charges of assaulting a police officer. He seemed to be a lone protester who got into a fight with the special police officers, according to the police. There were no significant injuries recorded. The Senate office buildings are one block away from the Heritage Foundation’s building.Days of demonstrations against the Trump administration’s immigration raids in Los Angeles and other cities coincide with the arrest. Regarding the demonstrators’ encounters with police officers, Trump wrote on social media: “IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT, and I promise you they will be hit harder than they have ever been hit before.” Since Trump was elected to a second term and started enacting measures like to the Project 2025 agenda the group developed, protests outside the Heritage Foundation have been quite frequent.

According to a former military legal officer, troops who jeered and cheered at Trump’s political remarks during a rally at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, yesterday did exactly that, despite Defense Department authorities claiming they did not break any military rules. Uniformed troops jeered Newsom and former President Joe Biden throughout the speech and shouted in support of Trump’s political claims. “Do you believe that Biden would have been supported by this crowd? Trump responded to jeers at Biden by saying, “I don’t think so.”

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told reporters today that he was “uninvited” to the White House picnic, which is usually attended by members of Congress and their families. He framed the move as retaliation for his criticism of important aspects of Trump’s program. As if that would somehow make me more accommodative, Paul stated, “They’re scared of what I’m saying, so they think they’re going to punish me, I can’t go to the picnic.” In a way, it’s absurd, but it’s also somewhat depressing that this is what it has come to. However, such petty vindictiveness makes you question the caliber of the people you’re interacting with.
